California pitcher Jolene Henderson tossed a six inning no-hitter, allowing just two Racers to reach base and striking out six as Murray State (2-7) fell to Cal 8-0 Saturday afternoon at the DeMarini Invitational.
Jenna Bradley and Meghan Sims each were awarded first after being hit by pitches, Bradley reaching in the first and Sims in the sixth.
Shelby Kosmecki started in the circle for MSU, holding the tenth-ranked Bears to a pair of runs through two innings. She was helped in the field by a trio of great defensive plays, starting with a double play to end the first inning as Stephanie Edwards gloved a scorcher down the line, tagged first and went to Megan Glosser at second to apply the tag. Madysen Wilton made a spectacular catch in the second, charging in on a foul ball and stretching out to make a diving catch for the third out of the inning with two runners on. Glosser knocked down a single behind second base in the third, limiting Cal to one run and beating the Cal runner at home with the throw.
The Bears put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two on a triple to right center that rolled to the outfield wall. Cal also scratched together a sacrifice fly and a single later in the inning to take a 6-0 lead through four.
The game ended in the sixth as Cal (12-2) pushed two more runs across with a double to the wall in left field to score runners from first and second.
Shelby Kosmecki picked up the loss for Murray State, earning her first decision of the season. She tossed four innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks with two strike outs.
The Racers return to action in California later tonight, taking on 14th-ranked Stanford at 5:45 CST.
