The Murray State women's soccer team closed out the nonconference portion of its 2013 schedule by falling at Arkansas State, 3-1, Sunday in Jonesboro.
Arkansas State surged to an early 2-0 lead in the contest with goals in the seventh and 16th minutes. Katey Carmichael scored one-on-one against MSU goalkeeper Savannah Haberman after a pass from Jordan Adams for the first goal, while Loren Mitchell scored her team-high fifth goal less than 10 minutes later.
In the 34th minute, Lindey Hunt cut the Red Wolf lead in half in the 34th minute with her first goal of the season. The goal was set up by Julie Mooney who passed the ball into Hunt from the left side. Hunt then buried the ball in the net, giving Mooney her third assist of the season.
However, just 1:17 into the second half Mitchell struck again, this time off a corner kick, to seal the win for ASU at 3-1.
The loss drops the Racers to 3-3-1 on the season as they prepare to begin OVC play next weekend at Cutchin Field. The Racers' OVC home opener is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. against Southeast Missouri, followed by a Sunday matchup with two-time defending league champs UT Martin at 1 p.m.
