The Murray State women's basketball team will begin OVC West Division play this weekend when it hosts two of its most storied rivals. On Saturday, the Racers will welcome UT Martin to the CFSB Center, followed by Southeast Missouri Monday. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
Â
The Racers ran into a hot free throw shooting Eastern Kentucky team that went 18-for-20 at the charity stripe, as Murray State fell in its 2013-13 OVC opener, 86-72, Monday in Richmond. The Racers did not shoot poorly in the contest, finishing at 36.9 percent from the floor, but could not keep pace with the 49.1 percent performance by the Lady Colonels.
MSU also did itself no favors on the free throw line, shooting just 8-for-16 in the second half, to finish the game at 62.5 percent. Keiona Kirby led Murray State in the game with 21 points, while Jessica Winfrey pulled down her second straight double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
Â
Saturday will be the 69th meeting in the series between UT Martin and Murray State, with the Skyhawks holding a slim 35-33 advantage. UT Martin holds the last win in the series, a 72-60 victory last season at the CFSB Center that extended its winning streak on the Racers' home court to three. The two teams split last season's series with MSU picking up its first win in Martin since 2009 by besting the Skyhawks, 82-72.
The win also stands as the lone win in seven tries for the Racers since Heather Butler and Jasmine began playing for the Skyhawks. The duo has helped UTM earn three straight trips to the NCAA tournament.
Â
UT Martin will enter Saturday at 8-6 overall and 1-0 in the OVC after winning its league opener, 88-75, Monday at Jacksonville State. Newsome had an outstanding night, as she led her team with 25 points and 11 assists. Butler followed behind with 14 points, while Taira Caldwell came off the bench to add 13.
Butler and Newsome currently combine for 38.9 points per game at 20.5 and 18.4, respectively, while Newsome also contributes a league-leading 5.6 assists per game. Aisha Jones leads the Skyhawks on the boards with 5.3 per game; with the team averaging just 36.2 per game, placing them 10th in the OVC. Saturday will be a battle of the two top scoring teams in the league, as the Racers will enter averaging 75.2 points per game compared to 74.6 by UT Martin.
Â
The Racers and Southeast Missouri have met on 56 previous occasions, with the Redhawks getting the better of MSU in 32 of those meetings. SEMO swept the season series with Murray State last season, besting MSU by 12 in Cape Girardeau and by three in Murray on Senior Day. Prior to last year, the Racers had won three straight games in the series and five of the previous six.
Â
Southeast Missouri starts the weekend with an overall record of 4-10. The Redhawks are also 0-1 in OVC play after dropping their lid-lifter, 74-81, to Belmont at home Tuesday. Patricia Mack led SEMO on the night with the game's only double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Kara Wright and Brianna Mitchell followed with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Redhawks currently average 61.9 points per game, while allowing 70.4. Shooting wise on the year, SEMO is 36.7 percent from the floor, 29.4 percent from 3-point range and 65.8 percent at the free throw line.
