A two-out, seventh inning home run by Shelbey Miller helped lift the Murray State softball team by Memphis, 4-3, on Wednesday at the Tiger Softball Complex in Memphis.
Memphis (22-30) wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as Kelly Braman scored Wheeler Hill just four batters into the game with a single up the middle. The hit was the third of the inning for the Tigers as Lindsay Crowdus and Hill led off the frame with singles of their own.
Murray State (28-21) tied the game in the fourth inning on a play that was set up by Mo Ramsey leading off the inning with a single. After Alexa Becker took Ramsay's place with a fielder's choice, Becker then advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch by Memphis' Ellen Roberts. After the wild pitch, Becker scored on a RBI-single from Jessica Twaddle to tie the game at one.
Cayla Levins led off the fifth with a single and was brought home in the next at bat with a double from Erica Howard to give MSU its first lead of the contest. However, in the bottom of the frame Roberts tied the game for Memphis with a double that scored Braman, who reached on an error in the previous at bat.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ijiah Hargrove began the inning with a walk, and after a passed ball, was moved to third on a single from Hill. The Tigers reclaimed the lead at 3-2 on the very next play with a sac bunt from Amber Lindahl that scored Hargrove from third.
Down to their last three outs, Murray State kept its composure by beginning the seventh with a lead-off single from Levins. Two batters later, Miller put MSU back on top for good with a two-out home run, her third of the season, that also scored Levins.
In the bottom of the frame, Memphis made things interesting with two base runners via a single from Jaye Smith and a walk by Haleigh Ross. With two outs, Ramsey grabbed a line drive from Hill just inches from the ground to end the game and give the Racers their first win in five tries over the Tigers.
Levins led Murray State on the day by going 2-for-3 and scoring two of her team's four runs. CheyAnne Gaskey (12-11) pitched four innings for Murray State to earn the win by allowing just one earned run on four hits and striking out three.
Murray State will put a cap on the 2014 regular season this weekend when it travels to Southeast Missouri for three games in Cape Girardeau. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
