Murray State softball's 2014 season came to a disappointing end on Saturday night, as the Racers fell 12-1 in six innings to SIU Edwardsville in the championship game of the OVC softball tournament at University Field in Jacksonville, Alabama.
The game did not begin as Murray State had hoped for as Alex McDavid blasted a solo shot to center field after the first two Cougars in the top of the first had already been retired. Rachel Coonrod followed McDavid's bomb with a single and was brought home in the next at bat with another SIUE home run, this time by Haley Chambers.
SIU Edwardsville (30-21) started of the second inning where it left off in the first, as Kayla Riggs led off the frame with a third home run to make it 4-0. After a pitching change for Murray State, Whitney Lanphier hit the fourth long ball of the day for SIUE, putting the Racers in a 5-0 hole.
After holding SIUE scoreless for the first time in the game in the top of the third, Jocelynn Rodgers finally got Murray State on the board with a home run of her own, cutting the deficit to 5-1. However, the Cougars got the run back in the top of the fifth with a single from McDavid that scored Allison Smiley, who began the inning with a single of her own.
In the sixth, SIUE poured on the offense by scoring six runs on five hits and three MSU errors to push the lead to an insurmountable 12-1. In the bottom of the inning, Murray State needed four runs just to keep the game alive, but came up empty handed and fell via the eight-run rule.
In addition to Rodgers home run, Jessica Twaddle and Leslie Bridges accounted for the other two Racer hits in the game. McDavid led SIUE on the night by going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and a home run.
CheyAnne Gaskey finished the season at 15-13 after she allowed four runs on four hits in one inning if work. Tournament Most Valuable Player Haley Chambers (18-13) notched the win for SIU Edwardsville by giving up just one run on three hits, while walking just one and striking out seven.
Following the game, Mo Ramsey, Casey Castile and Twaddle were named to the All-Tournament team. Twaddle led MSU in the tournament with a .714 average to go along with five hits, three runs, a double and home run.
Murray Stated ends its season at 32-22 overall, eclipsing the 30-win mark for the second time in the five year history of the program. The runner-up finish in the OVC tournament is also a program best, as the Racers finished in third place in each of the last two seasons.
