Racers Win Final Series At SEMO - Head To OVC

The Murray State softball team dropped its season finale at the Southeast Softball Complex in Cape Girardeau Sunday, 4-1, to Southeast Missouri. Despite the loss, the Racers will remain in fourth place entering next week's conference tournament.

The Redhawks (11-34, 3-20 OVC) did the majority of their damage in the third inning, beginning with a lead-off single by Lindsey Patterson. After moving to second on a sacrifice, Patterson scored on a single down the left field line from Savannah Carpenter. SEMO would go on to add three more run in the frame on a RBI-single from Leah Duffe and two errors by the Racers (30-22, 16-9 OVC).

The Racers cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth with a solo home run by Shelbey Miller that smacked off the scoreboard in right center. However, the run was negated in the bottom of the frame when Jamie Woodworth hit a solo shot of her own for the Redhawks.

In the seventh, Murray State put together a rally that was kicked off by a double from Casey Castile. After pinch hitter Taylor Odom was hit by a pitch in the next at bat, Erica Howard brought them both home with a double to the wall. However, that would be as close as MSU would get in the game and ultimately fell, 5-3.

CheyAnne Gaskey fell to 13-12 on the season with loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts over 2.1 innings of work. Mason Robinson finished the final 3.2 innings of the game for Murray State in the circle and gave up one run on four hits, to go along with four strikeouts and two walks.

The Racers go into this week's OVC tournament as the No. 4 seed in the event hosted by Jacksonville State. The Racers face No. 5 seed Eastern Kentucky Wednesday at 3 p.m. at University Field in Jacksonville, Ala. Here is the OVC Softball Tournament schedule and bracket.
