The Murray State soccer team looks to give their seniors a winning Senior Day memory as they take on SIUE Friday at 3 p.m. and Eastern Illinois on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The Racers are on a six-match winning streak, the longest win streak in program history. With an 11-4 overall record and 7-0 record in OVC play, the Racers look to clinch a share of the conference title over the weekend, their first since 2008.
Sunday is MSU Senior Day as the Racers will be saying goodbye to four stellar seniors. The illustrious careers of Taylor Stevens (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Racheal Foxley (Bolton, England), Rebecca Bjorkvall (Aland, Finland), and Marissa Burroughs (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) will be honored at the conclusion of Sunday's match.
In their last match against Tennessee Tech, the Racers upset the Golden Eagles' senior day by defeating TTU 2-1. Taylor Richerson and Taylor Stevens each had a goal in the match. Alex Steigerwald made seven saves in the win. The Golden Eagles goal broke the Racers' shutout streak that lasted three matches.
For their fine efforts in the matches against Morehead State and Tennessee Tech, the Racers were able to make a clean sweep of OVC weekly soccer honors. Harriet Withers, who scored the game-winning goal against Morehead State, took home the Offensive Player of the Week award. Steigerwald won her second straight Goalkeeper of the Week Award. Stevens set a new Murray State record by winning Defensive Player of the Week for the third week in a row.
Friday will be the eighth meeting between SIUE and Murray State. When the teams last met, the Cougars narrowly defeated the Racers in a 1-0 double overtime match. The last and only time that MSU came out on top was in a home match in 2011 where the Racers won 1-0.
SIUE came into the season as the defending OVC Champions. This season, the Cougars are fighting to make the OVC playoffs. The team comes in with a 2-4-1 record in OVC play and a 5-8-3 record overall. In their last match, the Cougars defeated Eastern Kentucky 1-0. Caroline Hoefert scored the lone goal. Jennifer Pelley had three saves in the match.
The Racers are 5-8-4 all-time against the Panthers, The last time these two teams met, MSU was able to pull out the 1-0 victory with a goal in the 84th minute. Withers had four shots, two on goal, in the match.
Eastern Illinois comes into the weekend 3-11-2 this season with a 1-5-1 record in OVC play. In their lone conference victory, EIU defeated Tennessee Tech. Ali Carlson had the lone goal for the Panthers. Goalkeeper Maddie Lyon had seven saves in the 1-0 victory. In their most recent match, the Panthers were blanked by Eastern Kentucky.
