Murray State looks to close out its soccer season undefeated in conference play as its hosts the Governors of Austin Peay State Thursday at Cutchin Field.
The Racers come into the match on a historic winning streak, winning each of their last eight contest. MSU clinched the OVC regular season title with a 2-0 win over SIUE last Friday, with Marissa Burroughs and Taylor Richerson each scoring match.
Murray State soccer honored their seniors Sunday in a special senior day match in which it defeated the Panthers of Eastern Illinois, 4-0. Rebecca Bjorkvall, Taylor Stevens, Emily Niehaus, and Harriet Withers each got on the score sheet for MSU
Stevens and Alex Steigerwald won adidas® OVC weekly honors once again with Stevens earning her fourth straight Defensive Player of the Week award and Steigerwald winning her third straight Goalkeeper of the Week award.
Thursday will be the sixteenth meeting all-time between the Racers and Austin Peay. In the last match between the two programs, the Racers pulled out the 3-2 victory over the Governors and now lead the all-time series, 10-4-1.
Austin Peay comes into the match with an 8-9 overall record and a 4-5 record in OVC play. In their most recent match, the Governors defeated the Cougars of SIUE, 2-0. Shelby Olszewski and Courtney Sheppard scored the goals in the match, while Lindsey Todd recorded her second shutout in a row for Austin Peay in goal.
With a win, the Racers will be the first team in OVC soccer history to go 10-0-0. Since women's soccer was added to the OVC, only five teams have been perfect through conference play, not losing or tying a single match. However, the last time this was done in was in 2002, when the conference schedule consisted of just six matches.
Though this will be the regular season finale for the Racers, their season is not over yet. MSU will host the OVC Championship November 6 and 8 at Cutchin Field in Murray. Murray State soccer has already clinched the overall number one seed for the tournament and will play the winner of the match between the four and five seeds, which takes place this Sunday.
