This Week
Winners of their last four out of five games, the Murray State softball team will travel to Conway, South Carolina. Originally scheduled to be a three-day, five-game tournament, the event has now reduced to four games in two day, Saturday and Sunday only. The Racers will now face Sacred Heart and Boston College on Saturday and Bucknell and the host Chanticleers on Sunday.
Last Week
The Racers went 3-1 at the Samford Softball Classic last weekend, losing only to host Samford, 6-5. The Racers picked up two wins against Nicholls State, 4-3 and 11-3, and a win over Gardner-Webb, 16-0 in five innings. Murray State hit .359 on the weekend with 14 extra base hits, including seven home runs.
Jessica Twaddle made program history against Gardner-Webb when she set the single-game record with seven RBIs, by hitting a grand slam and a three-run home run. Taylor Odom led the Racers on the weekend by going 5-for-9 with two walks, a double, a triple and a home run.
CheyAnne Gaskey had a good weekend in the circle going 2-1 with a save and a 2.38 ERA. She finished the weekend with a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio, at 18 and six, respectively, all while limiting opponents to a .245 batting average.
Against The Field
Murray State has never faced any of the teams in this year's Chanticleer Showdown Field. As for the for the conference represented, Murray State has never faced a team from Boston College's ACC or Sacred Heart's Northeast Conference. However, it is 0-1 against teams from Bucknell's Patriot league, losing to Boston University back in 2012, but is 2-0 against Coastal Carolina's conference, the Big South, beating Gardner-Webb both last season and this season.
Scouting Sacred Heart
The Pioneers have yet to play this season and are coming off of 12-30 season a year ago. Sacred Heart went 1-15 in the Northeast Conference and finished ninth. Justine Sibthorp returns this season after leading the team with a .291 average, with seven RBIs and four home runs in 2014. In the circle, Kacie Wentworth returns after turning in a team-low 2.19 ERA last season. Jamie Carlson also returns after leading the team with 112 strikeouts and a 3.16 ERA.
Scouting Boston College
Boston College was 4-1 at last weekend's Georgia Southern Tournament and will enter the weekend at 7-3 overall. The Eagles beat Tennessee Tech, Georgia Southern and Binghampton, but lost to Campbell. Annie Murphy and Taylor Coroneos lead the way for BC at .471 and .467, respectively. Each has seven RBIs and three walks, while Murphy has a double, a triple and 10 stolen bases and Coroneos has three doubles and a two stolen bases.
As a team, the Eagles are hitting .305 with 17 doubles, two triples and three home runs. In the circle, BC has a 4.91 ERA with 60 strikeouts compared to 30 walks all while limiting the opposition to a .271 average. Allyson Frei has been the go-to pitcher for BC this season with a 6-2 record and a 4.40 ERA. She has made nine appearances, with one save, 23 walks, 22 strikeouts and a .260 opponent's batting average.

Scouting Bucknell
The Bison are 5-3 overall after going 1-3 at East Carolina's Pirate Clash last weekend in Greenville, North Carolina. Bucknell beat East Carolina in five innings, but lost East Tennessee State, Marshall and Towson. The Bison are hitting a .269 clip with seven doubles, two home runs and 18 stolen bases.
Cheyanna Young with a .417 average, while Erin Cox and Lauren Swindell follow at .400 apiece. Bucknell currently has a team ERA of 5.67 with a .304 opponent's batting average. Dana Nielsen is 1-0 with 2.20 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 16.0 innings, while Amanda Fazio is 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA and 21 strikeouts.
Scouting Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers are 5-4 on the year after going 3-1 at their own Battle at the Beach tournament last weekend. Coastal picked up two wins against St. Bonaventure and a win over Iowa State, while dropping a 2-1 decisions to Iowa State.
As a team, the Chanticleers are hitting .315, while limiting opponents to .238. In the circle, CCU boasts 1.84 ERA, while opposing teams have turned in 5.79 ERA. Kiana Quolas leads the team with a .448 average to go along with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. Pitching wise, Kelsey Dominik is 3-1 and with an 0.88 ERA, 14 strikeouts and a .157 opponent's batting average.
New RBI Mark
Jessica Twaddle became the new single-game RBI leader against Gardner-Webb with seven RBIs. The previous record was six and was accomplished by Jenna Bradley twice and Casey Castile once.
New Member Of The Club
With her grand slam against Gardner-Webb, Jessica Twaddle became the ninth player in school history to accomplish the task. The grand slam was the 13th in the six-season history of MSU softball and the first of 2014. She joins current teammates Alexa Becker and Jocelynn Rodgers as members of the elite club.
Twice As Nice
Jessica Twaddle and Shelbey Miller became the seventh and eighth players in MSU history to hit two home runs in the same game when they did so against Gardner-Webb and Nicholls State, respectively. Alexa Becker and Mallory Richardson are the only other current Racers to have completed one of the more difficult tasks in the game of softball.
Double Up
Through nine games in 2015, Murray State has already turned 10 double plays for an average of 1.1 per game. The Racers turned just 16 in all of last season and the most they have ever turned is 20 in 2012 with the fewest coming in 2012 at eight. Last season, Utah led the nation in double plays and double plays per game at 46 and 0.84, respectively.
