Belmont scored the first 17 points of the game and shot nearly 62 percent in the first half as the Murray State women's basketball team fell Thursday night in Nashville, 87-61 at the Curb Event Center. The Bruins shot 52.3 percent from the floor in the game while MSU was held to 32 percent shooting.
Trailing 28-8 after the first quarter, the Racers (6-9, 2-2 OVC) started to find their range from long range, hitting six 3-pointers in the quarter. However, the Bruins (10-7, 2-2 OVC) were able to close the half on a 8-0 run and led at the break 53-30. The second half went much the same as the first, as the Racers struggled to get buckets in the period, getting outscored 21-12 in the frame as Belmont cruised in the fourth to close things out.
LeAsia Wright led MSU with 13 points in the loss. Bria Bethea had a solid game off the bench, scoring nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range and also added five rebounds. Kyra Gulledge added seven points and eight boards while Abria Gulledge and Ke'Shunan James each had seven points as well.
Belmont outscored the Racers 46-18 in the paint in the contest and also had a 19-10 edge in points off of turnovers and had a 15-6 advantage in second-chance points. The Bruins dished-out 21 assists in the game and had five players score in double figures.
The Racers look to snap their current two-game skid Saturday when they continue their Nashville swing with a 5:30 p.m. game at Tennessee State.
