1/30/2016 2:23:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The UT Martin press proved to be a big thorn in the side of the Murray State women's basketball team, as it was forced into 26 turnovers and was outscored 37-9 in points off of turnovers, as MSU fell to the Skyhawks 92-62 Saturday in Martin.
UTM (14-7, 7-1 OVC) turned a close game in the opening moments of the contest, into a blowout as the Skyhawks scored 17 straight points in the quarter and led 21-4 with 2:44 left to play in the opening period. After the Racers (7-13, 3-6 OVC) went on a run of their own to cut into the deficit, the Skyhawks closed the quarter on a 7-0 run, led 30-12 and never looked back. MSU trailed 49-24 at halftime.
The Skyhawks shot nearly 53 percent from the floor in the game and went 14-of-33 from 3-point range. MSU shot 37 percent and was 10-for-34 from long range in the loss. The Racers also went 10-of-16 from the free-throw line while UTM was 6-for-6.
The Racers held a 38-32 margin in rebounding in the game and had a slim 7-6 edge in second-chance points. UTM controlled the paint, 36-18 and also had a 12-5 lead in fast break points.
Abria Gulledge led the Racers with a career-high 19 points off the bench. Gulledge went 7-for-15 overall from the floor and hit 5-of-10 from 3-point range. Kyra Gulledge and Ke'Shunan James both tallied their second double-doubles of the season in the loss. Gulledge scored 12 points and had 12 boards while James had a great all-around game with a career-high 13 rebounds, 14 points, seven assists and three steals. Those seven assists tie a career-best for James. Both James and Gulledge's double-doubles have come in the same two games this season.
The Skyhawks had five players score in double figures and were led by Haley Howard and Myah Taylor's 21 points each.
MSU returns to action Feb. 3 when they travel to face Southeast Missouri in a 6:30 p.m. contest in Cape Girardeau.
