The Murray State women look to extend their season-best three-game winning streak Wednesday as the Racers travel to Charleston, Ill., for a 6 p.m. matchup with Eastern Illinois. MSU won the first meeting with the Panthers this season back in January, 66-56 in Murray. Kyra Gulledge and Ke'Shunan James each scored 17 points to lead the Racers. The 17 points was then a career-high for Gulledge.
The Racers are coming off an 80-61 victory over Southeast Missouri on Saturday at the CFSB Center. James led four Racers in double figures in the win with 18 points while Abria Gulledge added 14 and Bianca Babic and Jasmine Borders each chipped in with 12 points. MSU went 13-for-29 (44.8 percent) from 3-point range in the win.
Both Abria Gulledge and James took home OVC Player of the Week honors this week for their performances against the Cougars and Panthers. James was named the ADIDAS Co-Player of the Week along with Austin Peay's Tiasha Gray. It is James' third player of the week honor this season. Meanwhile, Gulledge received her first Freshman of the Week award.
After a 21-game losing streak, the Panthers enter Wednesday's contest having won their last two contests over Southeast Missouri and Austin Peay, both at home. Eastern Illinois is led by a pair of players averaging 10 points per game this season in Erica Brown and Shakita Cox. Brown also leads the team in rebounding with 7.1 boards per contest. Grace Lennox is fourth in the league averaging a team-high 4.9 assists per game. As a team, EIU ranks fourth in OVC play in 3-point shooting, averaging 36 percent from beyond the arc. The Racers have lost six straight at Lantz Arena.
With three games left to play in the regular season, the Racers are currently in sixth place in the OVC standings and sit a game behind SEMO for the No. 5 spot and a game ahead of Jacksonville State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. MSU is tied for sixth right now with APSU, but owns the tiebreaker right now over the Governors due to their head-to-head win earlier this season. MSU and APSU will meet again Saturday. The top eight teams make the OVC Tournament in Nashville in March.
