All-Time vs. UT Martin: UTM leads 40-33
Last Meeting: MSU 62, UTM 92 – Jan. 30, 2016
The Murray State women host UT Martin Saturday at the CFSB Center as the Skyhawks come to town for a pivotal matchup in the Racers' regular season finale. A win over UTM would clinch a spot for the Racers in March's OVC Tournament.
MSU currently sits in a tie for seventh-place in the league standings along with Austin Peay with the top eight teams making the conference tournament. A loss on Saturday would not eliminate the Racers from postseason contention as they would then need a loss by Tennessee Tech against Eastern Kentucky OR wins from Tennessee State and Austin Peay to force a tie for eighth place at 7-9 with TTU, a tiebreaker which MSU holds over the Golden Eagles.
The Racers failed to clinch a playoff berth last Saturday when their four-game winning streak was snapped at Austin Peay in an 81-72 loss to the Governors. Ke'Shunan James led the way for MSU offensively with 19 points while Jasmine Borders poured in a career-high 18 in the loss.
The first place Skyhawks lead the league in scoring offense averaging 77.6 points per game in conference play and are second in defense, allowing 62.3 points per in OVC games. UT Martin also leads the league in all shooting categories, shooting 45.8 percent from the floor as a team, 39.9 percent from 3-point range and 80.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Skyhawks are not a very deep team, as they only play seven players on a consistent basis. Haley Howard leads the squad averaging 14.7 points per game and is making nearly 88 percent of her free throws. Jessy Ward is the other Skyhawk averaging in double figures at 13.1 points per and is shooting 41.6 percent from beyond the arc. Chelsea Roberts is shooting a team-best 44 percent from long range and leads the team averaging 5.4 rebounds per contest. Both of UTM's conference losses this season have come on the road, at Eastern Kentucky and Austin Peay.
Saturday is Senior Day at "The Bank" as MSU will honor four Racers playing in their final home games for the blue and gold. Bianca Babic, Kyra Gulledge, Jashae Lee and Ajee Smith will all be honored prior to the contest.
