The Murray State women's basketball team closed the regular season with a 70-49 loss to UT Martin Saturday at the CFSB Center on Senior Night.
Cold shooting cost the Racers (11-16, 7-9 OVC) in the loss as they went just 16-for-59 (27 percent) from the floor, including just 22.6 percent in the second half. MSU was 13-of-40 from 3-point range and went to the free-throw line just six times, making four of its attempts. Meanwhile, UT Martin (21-8, 14-2 OVC) shot 39 percent from the floor and made 15-of-40 (37.5 percent) from beyond the arc. MSU scored a season-low 21 points in the second half and the 49 points total is the second-fewest for the Racers this season.
The Skyhawks forced MSU into six more turnovers in the game and had a 21-9 edge in points off of turnovers. UTM also held a 18-6 advantage in points in the paint while the Racers held a 9-5 edge on second-chance points, despite being out-rebounded 43-40.
LeAsia Wright led the way offensively for MSU in the loss with 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Jasmine Borders added nine points and had three baskets from beyond the arc, all of which came in the first half. Jashae Lee and Abria Gulledge chipped in with eight and six points, respectively while Kyra Gulledge grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.
Four seniors played their final home games Saturday at the CFSB Center and were honored prior to the men's game. They are, Bianca Babic, Kyra Gulledge, Jashae Lee and Ajee Smith.
Even with the loss, MSU has clinched the eighth seed in the OVC Tournament next week. Thanks to the loss from Tennessee Tech earlier in the night to Eastern Kentucky, the Racers will remain in the No. 8 spot and will once again be playing UT Martin. The Racers and Skyhawks will square-off Wednesday at noon in Nashville.
