The Murray State women's basketball team hits the road to face SIU Edwardsville for the second time this season as the Racers and Cougars face-off at 7 p.m. Wednesday. SIUE took the first meeting of the season back in January, 64-61 in Murray. Ke'Shunan James led the Racers with 19 points and five assists in the loss while Kyra Gulledge grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Racers are coming off a 75-72 victory over Austin Peay on Saturday. MSU fended off a second half APSU rally to hang on for the win. James led the Racers with 18 points while Abria Gulledge scored 17 and LeAsia Wright added 14 and five assists in the contest.
MSU used a new starting lineup in the victory. The Racers' starting five of Jasmine Borders, Abria Gulledge, Kyra Gulledge, James and Wright accounted for 67 points in the win and the 75 points overall, were the most for the team since scoring 83 in the conference opener against Morehead State on Jan. 2.
SIU Edwardsville is led by one of the top players in the OVC in Preseason Player of the Year Shronda Butts. Butts is second in the league in scoring, averaging 23.2 points per game in league play. Butts had a game-high 28 points against the Racers in the two's first meeting earlier this season. Butts also leads the team averaging 4.2 assists per game and is second on the squad pulling down 5.8 rebounds per contest. Donshel Beck leads the team with seven boards per.
SIUE is led by fourth-year head coach Paula Buscher. The Cougars had their six-game winning streak snapped against UT Martin on Saturday.
MSU is currently in ninth place in the OVC standings and is a game behind three teams for the eighth and final OVC Tournament seed. Jacksonville State and Tennessee State are two of those teams and own the tiebreaker over the Racers due to their head-to-head wins earlier this season. The other is Austin Peay, who the Racers meet again Feb. 20.
