Offense Slowed in Loss at EKU
5/14/2016 7:03:00 PM | Baseball
One day after Murray State was boosted by the home run ball, Saturday it was Eastern Kentucky who did most of its damage via the longball as the Colonels scored seven of their eight runs on homers and defeated the Racers 8-3 in Richmond to even the series at one game each.
The MSU (24-27, 12-14 OVC) offense was held in check for most of the game as the Racers collected six hits, three of which came in the ninth inning trailing 8-2. Jack Hranec led the way at the dish by going 2-for-4 in the loss. Kipp Moore went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
EKU (24-27, 13-13 OVC) got a two-run and three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the scoreless tie. The Racers were able to cut the deficit to 5-2 in the fifth on Hranec's RBI double down the right field line and a ribbie from Caleb Hicks. After the Colonels added another run in the sixth to make it 6-2, another two-run blast in the eighth pushed the lead to 8-2.
The Racers were able to add one more run in the top of the ninth as they collected three straight two-out hits in the frame. A single to center from Hicks brought home Moore for the third run in the loss.
Austin Dubsky took the loss in the start for MSU, pitching four innings and allowing five runs off six hits while walking four and striking-out three Colonels. John Lollar pitched four innings of relief.
Sunday's series finale is crucial to MSU's postseason hopes. First pitch from Hughes Field is set for noon central time.
