The Murray State baseball team scored in five straight innings and had three four-run innings as the Racers defeated Eastern Kentucky, 14-5 Sunday afternoon in Richmond to win the pivotal series with the Colonels.
Ramsey Scott led MSU (25-27, 13-14 OVC) with a three-hit day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI and two walks on the day. A trio of Racers collected two hits each in the win as Tyler Lawrence was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, Tyler Dixon went 2-of-4 at the dish with three ribbies and Caleb Hicks was 2-for-6 with two RBIs and runs scored each.
The Colonels (24-28, 13-14 OVC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with runs in both the second and third innings. Once the fourth hit however, the Racer bats came alive as they had the first of their four-run innings in the top half of the frame. A Jack Hranec single to center scored Lawrence to get MSU on the board for the first time, two batters later, Dixon cleared the bases with a double off the wall scoring three runs and putting MSU ahead for the first time, 4-2. It was a lead that the Racers would never relinquish the rest of the game.
The Racers tacked on to their lead with another four-run inning in the fifth. After Lawrence scored on a balk by EKU, Hicks hit a double off the wall in right center, scoring Hranec and Kipp Moore and put MSU out front 7-2. Hicks would eventually steal home on a double steal by the Racers and go up 8-2 after five and a half innings.
After an EKU solo home run cut the MSU lead to 8-3, the Racers would get the run back in the sixth with Scott's second RBI single of the day, this time scoring Aaron Bence. The knockout blow in the win came in the seventh inning in the form of a three-run home run from Adam Bauer to right center. Bauer's fifth homer of the season made it 12-3 in favor of the Racers.
A Hranec hit-by-pitch later in the seventh with the bases loaded and an RBI single to left from Lawrence in the eighth rounded out the scoring for the Racers. EKU would tally two more runs in the ninth to cut into the final deficit.
Brad Boegel picked up his first win of the season as he got the start on the bump for MSU. Boegel pitched six solid innings, allowing three runs on just four hits. Andrew Bramley and Cody Maerz pitched scoreless innings each in the game and Blake Clynes also made an appearance out of the bullpen.
With the win, MSU moves into seventh in the OVC standings and sits a game behind Tennessee Tech for sixth heading into the final week of the regular season. The top six teams in the league make the OVC Tournament.
The Racers return to action Tuesday as MSU and Kentucky will play a neutral site contest at Brooks Stadium in Paducah. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
