Kentucky hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning and scored two more in the sixth as the Murray State baseball team dropped its final non-conference contest of the season, 4-1 Tuesday night at Brooks Stadium in Paducah.
The Racers (25-28) did their lone damage in the seventh on a RBI single to right field from Adam Bauer which scored Nick Moore from second. Bauer, along with Ramsey Scott led MSU at the dish in the loss, each going 2-for-4. Moore was 1-for-3 on the night.
MSU collected eight hits in the loss while leaving eight stranded on the base paths. The Wildcats (30-23) tallied 10 hits and left four on base. The Racers were solid defensively on the night, turning a season-high three doubles plays on the night in the second, fourth and sixth innings.
Jack Hranec got the start on the hill for MSU and took the loss as he pitched 5.1 innings and allowed all four of UK's runs. Derrik Watson and Sheldon Baxter combined to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen.
Tuesday's contest started 45 minutes late due to rain all day in the area and was suspended and eventually called in the bottom of the eighth inning as hard rain fell inside Brooks Stadium. The Racers had a man on base and one out in the inning when the game was called.
The Racers close the regular season Thursday through Saturday as Morehead State comes to Reagan Field for a huge three-game series. MSU trails the sixth and final spot in the OVC standings by one game entering the series. The top six teams make it to the OVC Tournament later this month. First pitch for Thursday is set for 6 p.m.
