Racers Ready for OVC Championship
10/31/2019 2:18:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Murray State men's and women's cross country teams are back in action, Saturday, when they will run at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois. The men will run an 8K at 9 a.m. followed by the women running an 5K at 10 a.m.
It will be the 59th men's championships while the women will be running for the 41st time. It will be the first time that SIU Edwardsville has hosted the championship meet.
"The team has been working really hard in preparation for this meet, said distance coach Jordan Wallace. "We've met as a group after every race to talk about what went well and what we need to change before OVC. We have mimicked some of the more challenging parts of the Edwardsville course in practice, stayed on top of the little things every day like our mobility routines, circuits, and focusing on recovery. Everyone has looked really good these past few workouts and I think we are ready to go and show everyone what we've got."
Junior Caleb Kawasaki has been leading the way for the men, finishing in the top spot for the Racers in all four races this season, including a 4th-place overall finish on this course at the SIUE John Flamer Invite. He set a new personal record for an 8K at the Louisville Classic with a time of 25:26.8.
The Racers will also lean on senior Zach Balleau, who has finished as the team's second finisher in three of the four races and set a personal record at the Louisville Classic with a time of 25:44.9.
For the women, newcomer Emma Graf has been the top finisher for the Racers all season, including two top-ten finishes at the SIUE John Flamer Invite and the Murray State Open.
Sophomores Dani Wright and Morgan Vosler as well as senior Katelyn Gilbert are three of the other top runners for Murray State as they have battled for the spots behind Graf in all four races this season.
Eastern Kentucky has dominated the OVC recently as the men have won 13 straight OVC championships while the women have won seven straight.
