Turley’s Late Basket Gives Racers Fourth-Straight Win
12/3/2019 10:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Down four with 43 seconds left to play, the Murray State women's basketball team scored twice in 31 seconds, including a layup by Macey Turley with 2.2 seconds, remaining to top Evansville on the road, 61-59, at the Meeks Family Fieldhouse in Evansville, Indiana.
The Racers came out of the gates hot, opening the game on an 10-2 run and leading by as many as 14 in the first stanza. However, in the second quarter the Purple Aces used a 14-5 run of their own whittle the lead down to two, before eventually trailing by four at the break.
Murray State kept Evansville at bay in the third, until the Aces finally took their first lead since 2-0 with 4:29 to go in the contest. Down 55-54, Turley drained a three to put her team back on top just seconds after UE took the lead, only to have the Ace tie the game with 3:26 remaining on a pair of Abby Feit free throws.
From there, both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes until a Jada Poland jumper gave Evansville a 59-57 lead with 43 seconds left. Murray State then tied the game at 59, with 31 seconds to go, after Macie Gibson pulled down an offensive board off a Racer miss and put it back to tie the game for the third time in the final quarter.
With Evansville in possession of the ball and the clock dwindling, Alexis Burpo forced a turnover and took the ball down the court, eventually finding Turley who made the go-ahead layup with 2.2 seconds left. The Aces gave it a final heave after the MSU basket, but it was off-target as Murray State held on to pick up its fifth win in six games.
The big story of the night for the Racers was free throws with Murray State making 17 of 18, while Evansville went 16-for-28. In fact, the only miss of the night was from Turley, which put an end to a streak of 28 consecutive made free throws. The streak is now the fifth longest of all-time and is just one behind the fourth-longest of 29, which Turley achieved last season.
Turley finished the game with 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals, while Lex Mayes had 10 points and Burpo had eight points and a game-high 10 boards. The win pushed the Racers record to 5-2 on the year, marking just the third time since 2007-08 that Murray State has begun a season by winning five of their first seven.
On Saturday, the Racers return home in hopes of making it five in a row when they host Indiana State at 5 p.m. on ESPN+.
