Runner-up finish by Kimutai led the Racers to place second overall at Tennessee Tech
Murray State women's cross country placed second with 65 points at the Golden Eagle Invite, Friday.
Ruth Kimutai finished runner-up overall with a time of 23 minutes 44.54 seconds. She was fifth in the 800 meter mark (47.9 seconds) and moved to third in the 2-mile mark (12:13.8) before coming back in the back end to finish second.
"Ruth latched on the front pack. Even when the pack started to separate she chose not to settle and continued to push for a second place finish," said Jordan Johnston, cross country coach.
Freshman, Samantha Tucci finished tenth overall and second for the Racers with a time of 24 minutes 32.18 seconds. Tucci was 16th in the 800-meter mark (49.4) and moved up to 12th in the 2-mile mark (12:42.5) before finishing 10th.
Amirr Evans placed 12th, Ainsley Smith 19th
"Amirr and Ainsley is doubling as strong 800m/1500m track athletes and competed much better this meet," Johnston said. "They complete a hybrid middle distance and cross country training model, they have been working hard in the weight room and it's nice to see them do so well."
Breanna Day placed 22nd with a time of 25 minutes 12.1 seconds to round up the Racers top five.
The Racers competed in this meet last year but it was four weeks into the season.
"To have them come back and run faster on the same course is a big step forward," Johnston said.
The Racers will travel to Missouri for the Gans Creek Classic, Sept. 30.
