The Murray State women's track and field team competed at the Saluki Fast Start in the SIU Recreation Center in Carbondale, Illinois on Saturday.
"Today was a great opportunity after 16 weeks of training to see where we are," head coach Adam Kiesler said. "We are in a good spot heading into the break. It's always fun to see the freshmen competing at their first meet and the upperclassmen getting another chance to compete."
Senior Jenna Pauly had a stellar performance in the indoor season opener. She started the day off with a first-place finish in the long jump with 5.95 meters, just .05 meters short of her personal best. The McHenry, Ill. native also saw a runner-up finish in the pole vault event with 3.5 meters.
The Racers took a sweep of the top five in the high jump. Senior Meghan Fletcher won the event with 1.74 meters, followed by sophomore Brooke Probst, Pauly, and freshmen Caroline Murphy and DiamonAsia Taylor. Probst and Pauly tied with 1.71 meters, and Murphy and Taylor tied at 1.6 meters.
"The highlight of the day, event-wise, has to be the high jump," Kiesler said. "With three kids over 1.71—we can't be happier for that whole group."
Fletcher also secured a win in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.91 seconds. Darrione Joseph finished fifth in the event in 9.16 seconds.
Senior Kayla Bell saw a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 55.32 seconds. Senior Lucia Herrero Yanez trailed right behind Bell to finish second in 58.11 seconds.
Sophomore Chelby Melvin, freshman Anouk Krause, Bell and Herrero Yanez won the 4-by-400-meter relay with a time of 3:48.41. The quartet of sophomore Simone Joseph, senior Amirr Evans, senior Faith Bostick and Fletcher finished third with a time of 4:05.45.
Evans also secured a win in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:33.77, ranking fourth in MSU indoor history. Three other Racers also saw a top-five finish in the event. Krause, Melvin and Joseph finished in second, third and fifth. All four Racers finished within six seconds of each other.
Murray State will return to competition in 2024 when they travel to Nashville, Tennessee for the Commodore Challenge on January 12-13 in the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility.
"This group is hungry," Kiesler added. "Today showed that this group could be special."
