It's game-9 of the season for the Murray State Racers as they play their 100th season in program history in 2024.
The Racers travel to Brookings for their first meeting with South Dakota State at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium at 2 p.m.
The Racers are coming off a 59-3 loss at home last week to No. 1 North Dakota State.
J'Kaylon Carter caught four passes for 70 yards, both season highs for MSU's transfer receiver.
The 2024 schedule may be the most difficult MSU has ever faced as the season could produce eight opponents in 12 games that will be or were ranked nationally when they met the Racers.
So far, the Racers have played six ranked teams in the first nine games of the season.
Ranked opponents faced for Murray State include: NDSU & SDU and (11) Missouri, (8) North Dakota, (4) South Dakota, (16) Illinois State.
Since national FCS rankings began in 1978, the Racers have faced a top-5 team 24 times and have won five.
The last win against a top-5 opponent was in 2002 when they defeated Tony Romo and the No. 2 rated Eastern Illinois Panthers 37-35 at Roy Stewart Stadium. The game featured the game winner on the final play, a 52-yard field goal by Shane Andrus.
In 1980 and 1981, the Racers were the FCS preseason No. 1 team under Coach Mike Gottfried.
The Racers have lost their last 17 games vs ranked teams since a win at home (03-28-2021) 41-27 over 17th ranked Eastern Illinois. This game was played in March of 2021, after the season was postponed from fall of 2020.
MSU's five turnovers last week against NDSU came on three interceptions and a pair of fumbles.
The Racers were coming off back-to-back games with only one turnover combined in games against Indiana State and Illinois State.
The Racers have forced six turnovers this season in eight games, but have given the ball up 14 times.
The Racers' final home game of 2024 finds the Missouri State Bears visiting on Nov. 9.
The Bears are ranked this week in the FCS Coaches Poll at No. 17.
Road games at Kentucky (Nov. 16) and Southern Illinois (Nov. 23) wrap up the season for the Racers.
