Meghan Fletcher and Chelby Melvin each set school records to clinch their spot at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Meghan Fletcher and Chelby Melvin punched their ticket to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Saturday at the NCAA East Regional in Lexington, Kentucky.
"Having five individuals and a relay at this meet is great for the school and program," head coach Adam Kiesler said. "Fletch and Melvin getting to the final site is amazing. Seeing the careers of Faith [Bostick] and Amirr [Evans] is sad, but we are extremely thankful for what they have done for the program."
Fletcher cleared a height of 1.84 meters in the high jump on her third attempt to set a new personal and outdoor program record. She broke her own school record of 1.79 meters after reaching 1.81 meters on her third attempt before securing her spot at nationals.
"I think I performed really well," Fletcher said after clinching her second-straight nationals appearance. "I haven't jumped over six feet before, so this was a really big accomplishment for me. It's something that I've been really wanting for a long time, and to do it at potentially one of my last collegiate meets is the cherry on top of my whole college experience. To be able to jump six feet was on my list and I did that today, so I'm really happy about that."
Competing alongside Fletcher, freshman DiamonAsia Taylor tied her personal best after clearing 1.76 meters in the high jump for the second-straight meet and at her first NCAA regional appearance.
Melvin set a new personal best and program record in the 400-meter hurdles, recording a qualifying time of 56.49 on Saturday.
"Honestly I was nervous, I'm not going to lie," Melvin said. "But I think it's the way that I view nervousness that carries me through. So, I don't think nervousness is a bad thing, it's almost like I'm scared and nervous because I care about doing well. As long as I don't overwhelm myself and just hold on to that, I do well."
The sophomore has beaten out her personal best to set a new school record five out of the six times she has competed in the event during this outdoor season.
"Me and Coach K collaborate very well," Melvin said about Kiesler guiding her to her record-breaking performance. "We are a very good coach-athlete duo, if I do say so myself. Our relationship aspect really helped me this year compared to when I was at Arkansas State. Throughout the season we figured out what worked and what didn't work, and it's just been us working together and having those conversations that got us here."
Fletcher and Melvin open up competition at the NCAA National Championship meet on Thursday, June 6 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Melvin races in the 400-meter hurdle semifinals at 9:30 p.m. CT on Thursday, and Fletcher begins in the high jump finals on Saturday, June 8 at 4:00 p.m. CT.
"We are excited about Eugene in two weeks," Kiesler added. "We hope to represent the school and all Racers proudly."
