Racers’ Grab Early Lead But Fall at YSU

MSU scored on their first drive, but couldn’t stay with the Penguins in MVFC action
The Racers (0-8,) fell to 0-4 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference as they host the MSU Homecoming game Saturday (Nov. 1) against the Southern Illinois Salukis at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray at 4 p.m.
MSU won the coin toss and took the ball first and found pay dirt with 10:48 left in the opening quarter when Jim Ogle hit Lucas Desjardins on a 31-yard pass play to give the Racers a 7-0 lead.
The Penguins pushed ahead of the Racers by tying the score before the end of the first quarter and tacked on another 17 points in the second quarter for a 24-7 lead at halftime.
GAME NOTES
- Murray State captains today were (5) Conlee Crossno (R-Fr., Hodgenville, Ky.), (28) Jordan Washington (R-Fr., Helena, Ala.) and (42) Ja'Quan Redfern (R-So., Vineland, N.J.).
- The Racers won the coin toss and elected to take the ball.
- MSU promptly scored on their opening drive for the first time this season on a 31-yd touchdown throw from Jim Ogle to Lucas Desjardins.
- It was MSU's first time this season to score on their opening drive of a game and first since MSU got a 58-yard TD run from Jayden Johannsen at North Dakota (9-28-24).
- It marked the second time this season that the Racers have had a lead this season.
- The other was at Jacksonville State (9-20-25) on a field goal 3-0 at 3:54 of the first quarter.
- The game today marked the Racers' first game at YSU since they were both members of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1987.
- MSU offensive lineman Cameron Stancil had the rare feat of catching a pass with 3:40 in the second quarter.
- Stancil grabbed a tip pass and fell forward for a nine yard gain.
- MSU's Jack Tannefill booted a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and is now 6-of-8 this season and is 16-of-16 in extra point attempts.
- Back up quarterback, Baxter Wright, came off the bench to be the Racers' rushing leader with 30 yards on seven carries.
- Wright also threw is first collegiate touchdown pass to Cam Bullock on a 17-yard throw with 11:42 left in the game.
- Klayton Ingram led the Racers with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops.
- Today's game marked a fourth-straight week of taking on a FCS Top-25 team in the MVFC, the top league in all of FCS football.
- South Dakota was No. 21 (Oct. 4) when they met the Racers and Illinois State was No. 10 (Oct. 11) and last week South Dakota State was No. 2.
- Homecoming next weekend against SIU also features the retiring of the No. 26 that was worn by Danny Lee Johnson from 1977-81 where was the 1978 OVC Player of the Year and named All-America. Today, Johnson's career still stands as he is MSU's second all-time leading rusher with 2,522 yards. The ceremony will take place before kickoff.
