Racer Freshman Montgomery Set For USGA Junior Amateur
7/9/2025 8:47:00 AM | Men's Golf
MSU’s newcomer will play in one of the top junior golf events in the USA in Dallas on July 21
Murray State's men's golf incoming freshman, Brock Montgomery, will join his teammates for fall qualifying in August, but first he has a spot in the United States Golf Association (USGA) USA Junior Amateur (July 21-26) in Dallas, Texas.
Â
Out of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Montgomery is part of the 2025 signing class for MSU Coach Jacob Miller and is part of a field of 264 competitors in the U19 event to be staged at Trinity Forest Golf Club and Brook Hollow Golf Club.
Â
Montgomery gained a spot in the United States Golf Association event after surviving a five-way playoff for two alternate spots (May 28) at Silver Lake Country Club in the Cleveland area with a score of 71.
Â
A phone call with good news last week was just what Montgomery was hoping for.
Â
"I was actually on a family vacation and the phone rings for a call from New Jersey and you're kind of just thinking, oh man, who could this be?" Montgomery said. "The voice on the other end says he's from the USGA. I instantly thought, well he's just calling to let me know that I won't be getting in. But he tells me there is an open spot and asks if I wanted to accept it? That's the quickest I've ever said yes in my life!
Â
The recent success of Murray State Golf student-athletes appearing on the national stage is impressive for MSU Coach Jacob Miller. In 2024, Trey Wall played in the United States Amateur and Sam Guest played in the National Junior PGA Championship. Montgomery's entry into the U.S. Junior Am marks the eighth instance of MSU student-athletes playing in a USGA event since 2006.
Â
"Last summer, Trey Wall and Sam Guest make it to a national championship and we were pumped up because it was the first time in a while," said Coach Miller. "And now we've put three on this level in less than a year. It's super exciting for the momentum of our program here at Murray State because those three guys include one freshman and two sophomores, so that's awesome. We're very excited to see Brock play like he did to get into the field in Dallas and wish him the best."
