Murray State falls to Youngstown State
MURRAY, Ky. — The Murray State Racers (1-9, 0-6 MVFC) put up season highs in several offensive categories but were unable to overcome 2025 Walter Payton Award winner Beau Brungard and the No. 4 Youngstown State Penguins (8-2, 6-1 MVFC) on Saturday afternoon.
The Racers put up 536 yards of total offense, their second-most in the Jody Wright era behind the 2025 season-closing win over Indiana State. Quarterback Collin Shannon accounted for 351 yards and 3 touchdowns, the most yards for any QB in the Wright era and the most in the MVFC era for Racer football. Tyrell Campbell put up a career-high 142 yards on the ground, and Jaxon Potter had 115 receiving yards in his second consecutive 100-yard game.
Youngstown State got on the board first in the opening quarter on Brungard's first passing touchdown of the afternoon before the Racers drove down the field on an explosive 4-play, 83-yard drive that was capped off with a 10-yard strike from Collin Shannon to Trey Firestone for a 7-7 tie.
The Penguins reached the end zone 3 times in the second quarter and again early in the third to open up a 42-7 lead before the Racers punched back with another long drive. The navy & gold went 75 yards in 7 plays before Collin Shannon found Malachi Williams wide open for his second touchdown of the season. After another YSU touchdown, the Racers capitalized off a strong run game for another 75-yard drive, capped off by a 5-yard score by Tyrell Campbell.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter as two different Racers notched their first career touchdowns. Fifth-year running back Cade Fields took it 32 yards to the house, and sophomore Dylan Embry caught Collin Shannon's third touchdown pass of the game to make the final score 62-35.
Shannon finished the day 23-of-39 for 351 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Tyrell Campbell led the rushing attack with a touchdown and 142 yards on 19 carries, and Cade Fields added 45 yards. In addition to Potter's 115 yards, Trey Firestone had 86 yards and a touchdown on 6 catches, and Dimitri Howard had 57 yards on 2 catches, while Embry and Malachi Williams each added a touchdown reception.
Terry Lewis II and Rett Hemphill led the defense with 10 tackles each, while Hemphill added a tackle for loss. Tay Cline had 7 tackles, and Dylan Rowsey added 6 with a tackle for loss. Dax Pregant added a tackle for loss with a total of 2 tackles on the day.
