Murray State Defeats South Dakota State and Falls to North Dakota
The Murray State Racers (6-7) picked up one win in a pair of games on Friday at the Velvet Milkman Classic in Murray, Kentucky.
Game 1: Murray State 9, South Dakota State 1 (5 innings)
In their first game of the afternoon, the Racers jumped out on top early and never looked back, beating the Jackrabbits 9-1 in five innings.
Kenley Minor got the scoring started in the first inning with a single to center field that scored Bailey Broemmer and Allie Waldron.
After the Jackrabbits scored their only run of the day, Reagan Towns added another pair of runs on a single to right-center, making it 4-1.
The Navy and Gold exploded in the fifth inning, as Allie Waldron walked in a run before Bailey Broemmer cleared them all with a three-RBI double that made it 8-1. Needing just one run to end the game, Adison Hicks delivered a double to right-center, scoring Broemmer and securing the run-rule victory for Murray State.
Kynadee Warner went 3-for-3 at the plate on the day, scored a run, and drew a walk; and Ailey Schyck went 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored, and a walk. Broemmer went 1-for-3 with a double, scored two runs, drew a walk, and recorded three RBI. Waldron went 1-for-2, scored two runs, drew a pair of walks, and recorded an RBI. Kenley Minor recorded a hit and two RBI, and Adison Hicks had one hit and one RBI, as did Reagan Towns.
Bre Haislip got the win in the circle after pitching all five innings, allowing just one run and striking out four.
Game 2: North Dakota 2, Murray State 1
The script flipped in Friday's nightcap, as the Racers and Fighting Hawks battled through a pitching duel.
North Dakota was able to add a single run in both the first and second innings on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Brooklyn Morris.
The lone run for Murray State came via a deep home run to center field by Bailey Broemmer that cut the deficit to 2-1. However, the Racers could not capitalize with runners in scoring position in either the fifth or sixth inning and went down in order in the final inning.
Emily Siurek (1-1) got the start in the circle for Murray State and was saddled with the loss after pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing an earned run. Karlye Graber pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief, allowing just two hits and no earned runs while racking up a career-high nine strikeouts.
Bailey Broemmer went 2-for-3, including her solo home run, while Katy Huels, Kynadee Warner, and Allie Waldron each recorded one hit, and Ailey Schyck drew two walks.
