Murray, Ky. – Following a weekend series sweep over Butler, the Murray State baseball team heads to Martin, Tennessee, to take on UT Martin in the first of two midweek games against the Skyhawks.
The Racers will look for a different result than their first midweek game against North Alabama, aiming to bounce back from a road loss to the Lions last week.
Murray State found success on both sides of the ball against Butler, generating consistency on offense and limiting runs on defense. After allowing an average of 10.5 runs per game through the first four games of the season, the Racers' pitching staff found its stride. The arms held a Bulldogs roster that entered the weekend averaging 10 runs per game to just two runs per contest.
UT Martin also faced Butler in its opening weekend series, taking two of three in a high-scoring set.
The Racers' offense has found different avenues of success thus far. Last weekend's showing featured plenty of traffic on the basepaths, as Murray State tallied 30 hits during the series, with just eight going for extra bases.
Luke Mistone has paced the MSU offense early on, posting a .438 batting average through seven games while striking out only once.
Murray State and UT Martin are familiar foes. The upcoming game marks the 122nd all-time matchup between the two programs, with MSU holding a commanding 84-37 series lead. Since head coach Dan Skirka took over the helm in Murray, the Racers have dominated the rivalry, boasting a 12-3 record against the Skyhawks.
UT Martin enters the midweek matchup 3-4, having lost their last three games and dropping the series against Nicholls. The Skyhawks entered the season picked eighth in the preseason OVC poll, and had two players appear on the Preseason OVC Players to Watch List, TJ Grines and Jacob Sitton.
Redshirt Junior, Garner Anderson, is coming off a career weekend, where he hit three home runs and three doubles across the weekend series, driving in 10 runs total.
The Racers and Skyhawks are scheduled for a 3 p.m. central first pitch in Martin, Tenn. Tomorrow's game will not be streamed, but fans are encouraged to follow along via live stats on GoRacers.com and on @RacersBaseball on Instagram and X.
