Murray State beats Nicholls and falls to Northern Kentucky.
The Murray State Racers (1-1, 0-0 MVC) split a pair of opening-day games at the Stinger Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.Â
Game One
The Racers opened the day with a game against the Nicholls Colonels. In the opening inning, Erin Krause put the Colonels on top as she scored after Laylin Sturm was hit by a pitch. Adison Hicks delivered the answer for the Racers in the top of the third with a two RBI double to center field that scored Ava Ozment and Parker Holcombe and put Murray State ahead 2-1.
The Colonels answered right back in the bottom of the inning as Gabby Higbee tied the game with an RBI double.Â
Following three deadlocked innings, Parker Holcombe put the Racers back in front with a single that scored Kynadee Warner and allowed Allie Waldron to score as Holcombe advanced on the throw. Adison Hicks expanded the lead to 5-2 with another RBI, this time a single that scored Parker Holcombe. Â
Raylee Roby got the win in the circle for the Navy & Gold, pitching five scoreless innings. The Owensboro, Kentucky native picked up three strikeouts across 16 batters faced. Karlye Graber pitched two innings as the starter, allowing two earned runs and striking out four. Â
Adison Hicks led the way at the plate in her return, going 3-3 with three RBI and a walk. Kynadee Warner went 2-4 with a run scored in her Murray State debut, and Parker Holcombe went 1-2 with an RBI and a walk. Katy Hules, Ava Ozment, and Ailey Schyck all had one hit. Â
The win gave head coach Kara Amundson her 350th career win. Amundson has spent 14 seasons at the helm of Racer softball and has the most wins as head coach in program history.
Game Two Â
The nightcap against Northern Kentucky started out quietly as neither team was able to put a run on the board through the first two innings. Â

Kenley Minor provided the lone run for the Racers with an RBI triple in the 7th that made the final score 7-1. Â
