Murray State Picks up First Sweep of 2026

The Murray State Racers (23-21, 14-9 MVC) defeated the Illinois State Redbirds (25-19, 14-12 MVC) 6-1 to complete their first sweep of the 2026 season on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Normal, Illinois.

Following the sweep, the Racers are third in the Missouri Valley Conference standings and winners of four straight. Meanwhile, the Redbirds are one spot behind in fourth after losing their sixth in a row.

After a scoreless first inning, Bailey Broemmer got the Racers on the board first with an RBI double to right-center field. After Allie Waldron got on base with a single and Broemmer got on base with her second double of the day, Reagan Towns extended the Racer lead in the fourth with a two-run double that made it 3-0 in favor of the Racers. Katy Huels then traded places with Towns to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Redbirds got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly before the Racers got back to work. Ailey Schyck blasted her fifth homer of the season in the top of the sixth, a shot to left-center field that made it 5-1, and Reagan Towns added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give the Racers a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Redbirds got a runner on base in the seventh but were not able to capitalize as the Racers closed out a 6-1 win and a series sweep.

Reagan Towns went 1-for-2 with three RBI, a double, and a sacrifice fly. Bailey Broemmer and Ailey Schyck both went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI as Broemmer doubled twice and Schyck hit a solo home run. Kenley Minor, Allie Waldron, and Katy Huels each had one hit, and Huels had an RBI double.

Bre Haislip (10-8) earned the win after pitching four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, and striking out two. Raylee Roby pitched three innings in relief and allowed just one hit.

The Racers will travel to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, for a midweek game against SEMO on Tuesday, April 28, at 3 p.m. CDT before a weekend series at Drake on May 1-2.
