Murray State Finishes Regular Season with 17-9 MVC Mark
The Murray State Racers (26-21, 17-9 MVC) defeated the Drake Bulldogs (13-38, 7-21 MVC) 9-7 to complete the series sweep on Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.
After winning the regular-season finale, the Racers are winners of seven straight and have the program's highest regular-season win total since 2023, when the team finished 33-20. Murray State ends the season third in the Missouri Valley Conference standings and will compete in the 2026 MVC Softball Championship in Carbondale, Illinois.
The Racers fell behind early as Drake jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning on a pair of RBI singles.
Katy Huels put the Racers on the board in the top of the second with an RBI single of her own before Adison Hicks scored in the third to tie it 2-2.
Ava Ozment provided another clutch hit in the fourth inning with a single to the right-field corner that scored Bailey Broemmer and gave Murray State its first lead of the afternoon. Adison Hicks notched her seventh homer of the season in the following inning, a two-run shot to left-center field that extended the lead to 5-2, and Parker Holcombe added one more in the fifth by scoring on an error.
After the Bulldogs cut into the lead with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom of the fifth, the Racers plated another pair of runs on a chaotic play that saw Adison Hicks drive in Katy Huels with a bunt single before a rundown allowed Kynadee Warner to score and Hicks to advance to second safely.
Trailing 9-4 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs attempted to mount a comeback as they scored three runs on a single, an error, and a sacrifice fly. However, reliever Emily Siurek slammed the door with a strikeout to end the game and clinch the sweep.
Bre Haislip (11-8) earned the win after allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three in 3 2/3 innings of work, while Siurek earned the save after pitching the final 2/3 of an inning. Raylee Roby and Karlye Graber also made appearances in the circle.
Adison Hicks led the Racers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and a pair of runs scored. Katy Huels also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Ava Ozment got a hit and an RBI in her only plate appearance, while Kynadee Warner, Parker Holcombe, Allie Waldron, and Bailey Broemmer each had one hit as well, with Warner adding a stolen base. Kenley Minor tallied two RBI despite not getting a hit.
