Racers Wrap Up Weekend at NIU Invitational

Murray State lost both matches on the final day of the NIU Invitational in DeKalb, Ill.
The Racers, who were coming off a win against host Northern Illinois on Friday, fell to Lindenwood (4-1), 3-1, in the first match before being swept by Portland State (2-4) to close the weekend.
Against the Lions, the Navy and Gold took an early 2-1 lead in the first set behind an Alexa Watts kill, which would be their only lead of the set, before falling 25-19. Murray State then dropped the second set 25-15.
The Racers responded in the third set, hitting .400 with 18 kills and just two attack errors en route to a 25-21 win. Mija Pristovnik and Anne Makowski combined for nine kills in the set, while Watts added five kills on six attempts.
Lindenwood answered in the fourth set, pulling away from an 8-8 tie to take the set 25-15 and close out the match.
Makowski led Murray State with 15 kills, while Ceren Durak added nine and Alexa Watts chipped in seven. Setters Katie Titus and Paige Brock combined for 43 assists, while freshman Ada Tamturk led the Racers defensively with 16 digs.
In the final match of the weekend, Portland State took control early and defeated Murray State in straight sets, 25-18, 25-19, 25-13. The Vikings hit .360 for the match while holding the Racers to .133.
Makowski and Pristovnik led Murray State with eight kills apiece, with Pristovnik hitting .250 and adding two service aces. Brock dished out 20 assists, while Tamturk once again led the back row with 11 digs.
The Racers will be back in action Sept. 11 when they take on Northern Colorado and Georgia State at the Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tenn.Â
