Dale Alexander – Baseball and Basketball, 1956-1961
- Alexander was a three-time team MVP winner with Murray State Baseball.
- He was a member of the first team of Coach Johnny Reagan.
- He was also a member of MSU Basketball under Coach Cal Luther.
- “This is a dream I hope I never wake up from,” Alexander said in his Hall of Fame Induction remarks. “You just can’t believe what this does to you until you stand up here.”
- Alexander also thanked his parents, and talked about playing for Reagan.
- “You had to play for this man to appreciate him,” he said. “He’s the kind of guy who didn’t have to say anything to you but you were ready to leap to the moon for him.”
- A true two-sport athlete, Alexander originally came to Murray State to play basketball under Coach Rex Alexander (no relation) and ended up playing for Coach Luther.
- Alexander played varsity basketball for three years, and was the team’s second-leading scorer in 1958-59, averaging 11.9 points per game.
- However, baseball was his best sport.
- Joining the baseball team in 1958, Reagan’s first year, Alexander hit .393 with five triples and 21 runs batted in – in only 17 games.
- He finished his career with a .355 batting average, a record at the time.
- He was team MVP three times.
- With Alexander leading the way, MSU won or shared the Ohio Valley Conference championship in each of his three years and posted a 47-17 won-lost record.
