Ethridge McKeel, who played basketball for Murray State in 1936-38, and Bill Graham, who played golf for Murray in 1961-63, have been named to the Murray State Athletic Hall of Fame.
The two new members of the Hall of Fame will be honored at the MSU All-Sports Banquet on May 3.
McKeel played for the Racers in perhaps the most successful era ever for Murray basketball. His three teams had a combined win-loss record of 72-9, - 23-2 in 1936, 22-3 in 1937, and 27-4 in 1938. In regular-season play, the three teams had only one defeat each season.
The 1936 team won the Southern Intercollegiate championships, beating Western Kentucky 28-26 in the final game. The 1937 team was runner-up in the SIAA, and the 1938 team finished third in the tournament sponsored by the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball.
McKeel was named to the All-NAIB tournament team in 1938, the All-SIAA teams of 1937 and 1938, and the All-Kentucky Intercollegiate teams of 1936, 1937, and 1938. He was a co-captain of the 1938 team.
McKeel scored 695 points in this three varsity seasons with the Racers, which, at his graduation, made him the third-most prolific scorer in Murray’s history.
Originally from Rector, Ark., McKeel is now mathematics teacher and head of the mathematics department at a junior high school in Arnold, Mo. (Murray State Alumnus, May 1972)
