Garrett Beshear – Basketball, 1949-1952 (Deceased)
Beshear was the second most prolific scorer in Murray’s basketball history. He scored 1798 points in 117 games for a career average of 15.4. His 23.8 is still a Murray State record. He and Purcell played together for three years (1949-1952). Their 1950-51 team won the OVC regular season and tournament championships. Their ’51-’52 team was runner-up in the N.A.I.A. Tournament.
Beshear scored 40 points each game in back-to-back games in 1952-53, leading the Racers to wins over Dayton and Marshall.
At his death, he was basketball coach at University School, a position he had held since 1954. (The Murray State News, May 14, 1969)
