Roy Stewart – Football Coach and Athletic Director , 1932-1967 (Deceased)
Roy Stewart, head football coach at Murray for 12 seasons, Johnny Reagan, baseball coach and former basketball and baseball player, and Herman Shaw, former football, basketball, and baseball player, have been named to the Murray State Athletic Hall of Fame.
Coach Stewart’s teams at Murray won 60 games, lost 34, and tied 11. His 1933 team had a 9-0 record and is the only undefeated, untied team in Murray’s history. That team and his 1937 team, which was 8-1-1, were champions of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Coach Stewart came to Murray in 1932 as assistant coach and was named coach the next year. He stepped down from the top slot in 1941 to devote more time to his job as athletic director. Nevertheless, when Jim Moore entered the service after the ’41 season, Coach Stewart again took over the job until Moore returned in 1946. His 1944 team was 5-2 and his ’45 team was 5-2-1.
Coach Stewart’s teams scored 1910 points to their opponents’ 965. Among the more notable scores during Coach Stewart’s tenure were: Murray 105, Louisville 0; Murray 0, Miami, Fla. 0; Murray 70, Middle Tennessee 7.
Coach Stewart retired as athletic director in 1966. Since his retirement he has continued to live in Murray. (Murray State Alumnus, May 1971)
Stewart is regarded as a "Founding Father" of the OVC in which he along with Eastern Kentucky University's Charles Hughes and Western Kentucky University's Dr. Kelly Thompson planned the creation of the Conference in 1941. He was inducted into the OVC Hall of Fame in 1977.
