Racers Close Out War Eagle Classic With Sunday Morning Doubleheader
An early first inning error lead to a three-run hole the Murray State softball team was unable to get out of Saturday afternoon, falling 14-2 in six innings at the War Eagle Classic against host Auburn.
The undefeated Tigers needed just one hit in the opening frame to score three runs after an error and a pair of walks loaded the bases. Kelsey Cartwright tripled to center field to clear the bases and put Auburn ahead 3-0.
Box Score
Murray State (1-3) responded in the bottom half of the inning as Jenna Bradley doubled and scored on Stephanie Mattocks single, both with two outs, to cut the Auburn advantage to two.
After MSU starting pitcher Chelsey Sullivan set the Tigers down in order in the second, the Racers offense threatened to score as Meghan Sims took first after being hit by a pitch and was moved to third on a single by Leslie Bridges to right. Sims would fail to score, being thrown out at the plate on an attempted double steal. Murray State would salvage a run later in the inning as Bridges advanced to third on a foul out down the first base line and came in to score on a bunt single by lead-off batter Megan Glosser.
The Racer offense would be silenced for the remainder of the game with just two batters reaching base on walks as Auburn (14-0) extended its lead to 7-2 through five innings before scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth.
Sullivan took the loss for MSU, throwing five innings in the circle and allowing seven runs with just two being earned on five hits and five walks while striking out five.
Murray State closes out play at the War Eagle Classic with a Sunday morning doubleheader, meeting Belmont at 9 a.m. and following with Georgia Southern at 11:30 a.m.
