BOX SCORE
Murray State soccer dropped its opening game of the 2011 season, falling 3-0 to Ball State at the Western Kentucky Tournament in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Cardinals (1-0) picked up a pair of goals off of corner kicks after halftime, taking a 1-0 lead on a Skylar Chew header at 45:55. Brigit Reder picked up the second goal of the game for Ball State, heading in another corner kick in the 56th minute. Both goals were assisted by Amanda Dreyfus.
They added a third and final goal from eight yards out with just over four minutes remaining in the game. “We held Ball State in the run of play today but they are very dangerous on set pieces,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “We played hard and had our chances to score but needed to defend better on corners. Jenelle Cunningham and Yi Du both had very solid games today so it was good to see improvements. We are still a young team trying to work out the kinks but we will be working hard to improve every game.”
The Racers (0-1) attempted eight shots on the day, four coming on goal. Julie Mooney led the team with four total shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Yi Du made her first career start for MSU, making six saves in 90 minutes.
The Racers play one more game at the WKU Soccer Complex this weekend, facing off with Western Carolina Sunday at noon.
