Despite a league-play high of 30 shots, including 15 on goal, the effort was not enough to top Eastern Illinois as the Murray State women's soccer team fell, 2-1, Sunday at Cutchin Field.
For every shot the Panthers (5-10, 5-1 OVC) placed on goal Sunday, the Racers (4-8-1, 1-5 OVC) answered with three of their own. The 13 total shots and five on goal taken by EIU in the match is the least Murray State has permitted against an OVC opponent this season
Despite the relatively small number or shots on goal by the Panthers, it's what they did with them and when they took them that proved the difference. Of the five shots on goal for EIU, two went past Murray State goalkeeper Savannah Haberman, which was enough for the win Sunday.
The first goal for EIU came in the 24th minute when Lauren Hoppensteadt dribbled the ball from midfield, then fired from about 20-yards out to give her team the early 1-0 lead. However, just eight minutes later, Julie Mooney scored her team high seventh goal of the season off a pass from Kelsey Smith to pull her team level heading into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, the Panthers place just two shots on goal, one at the beginning and one at the end. It was the one at the beginning that proved to be costly for the Racers, as Madison Carter found Meagan Radloff inside the six-yard box to put EIU on top for good in the 60th minute
Murray State peppered EIU goalkeeper Cortney Jerzey with 11 shots on goal in the second stanza. Jerzey responded in a big way by saving 10 of the 11 herself and ended the day with 13 total saves.
The Racers will hit the road next weekend with games at Eastern Kentucky Friday and Morehead State Sunday. Game times are set for 3 p.m. and 12 p.m. CDT, respectively.
