The Murray State women's soccer team will play the first two of its final three away matches this weekend when it travels to Eastern Kentucky Friday and Morehead State Sunday.
The Racers dropped two heartbreakers last week at home, a 5-2 decision to SIU Edwardsville and 2-1 loss to Eastern Illinois. The more frustrating aspect of each loss is that the Racers were up at halftime against SIUE and tied against EIU.
After taking a 2-1 lead into the locker room at the break against SIUE, Murray State allowed four goals in the second half to fall, 5-2. After allowing an early second half goal against EIU, the Racers could not pull level despite putting 11 shots on goal in the second stanza.
Julie Mooney led the MSU with two of its three goals on the weekend, putting a ball in the back of the net in each match. Despite the five goals by SIUE, Savannah Haberman did the best she could amidst a barrage of shots by the Cougars and ended the match with a career-high 12 saves.
In nine meetings with Eastern Kentucky, Murray State has lost just twice and leads the series with five wins. While EKU might have just two wins in the series, they have come over the last three meetings.
The Colonels got their first win of the series in 2010 in Richmond, then after a MSU win Richmond in 2011, picked up win No. 2 last season in Murray. Five of the nine series meetings have come at EKU Soccer Field, with the Racers hold a 2-1-2 margin in those contests.
EKU, like the Racers, are currently on the outside, looking in at the play-off picture. Eastern Kentucky is currently 2-10-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in league play. Last weekend, the Colonels picked up just one point by tying at home against SEMO, 0-0, and then dropping a 0-1 decision to UT Martin.
Eastern Kentucky has scored a league-low seven goals as a team this season and have allowed a league-high 34. Cassie Smith and Kristan Paynter currently lead the EKU offense with two goals each, while Smith, Nikki Donnelly and Katie Collar have a team-high two assists a piece. Erika Wolfer is the primary goalkeeper for the Colonels and has a goals against average of 2.72 and 48 saves.
After winning five of the first six matches against Morehead State, Murray State now trails the all-time series, 8-6-1. The Racers have not won in the series since a 2-0 victory in Murray in 2007.
The Eagles have won each of the last five matches and are 6-0-1 over the last seven meetings. Despite the lopsided results over that stretch, each of Morehead State's wins over that time frame has come by just one goal. Murray State has won two of seven lifetime meetings at Jayne Stadium with the last win in Morehead coming in 2004.
After falling to UT Martin, 3-0, Friday, a 5-2 win over previously unbeaten SEMO Sunday, vaulted Morehead State back into play-off contention. The Eagles are currently 4-9-1 overall on the year, but are 3-2 in OVC action.
Angela Black scored the equalizer and game-winning goal for Morehead State against SEMO, while Jade Flory also helped out and notched her seventh goal of the season. Flory will enter the weekend with the exact same stat line as Murray State's Julie Mooney, as each have team-highs of seven goals and five assists on the year.
Elizabeth Floyd has appeared and started in each of the last seven matches for the Eagles and is 4-3 over that stretch. She leads the Eagles with 20 saves and has a goals against average of 1.25.
