The Murray State softball team will be looking to build on its three-game win-streak when it travels to arch-rival UT Martin for a three game set this weekend. The Racers will enter the weekend in seventh place in the OVC standings, just a half game out of sixth place and two and a half games ahead of the two teams tied for eighth.
Murray State extended its current win streak to three on Wednesday by sweeping a doubleheader with Bethel (Tenn.) at Central Park. The Racers took game one by a score of 6-0, then followed it up with a 12-1 five-inning victory in game two.
The Racers outscored the Lady Wildcats, 18-1, in the doubleheader and also outhit them, 18-7. Additionally, all three Murray State pitchers saw action on the day and combined to limit Bethel to just one unearned run and a tepid .175 batting average.
In game one, Shelbey Miller started the game off with a triple and the Racer offense was never turned off from that point on. Miller and Ellyn Troup led the Racers in the contest by finishing the game a perfect 2-for-2. In the circle, CheyAnne Gaskey and J.J. Francis combined for the shutout, with Gaskey pitching the first six innings to earn the win. Gaskey finished the game with no runs on four hits, nine strikeouts and just two walks to advance to 9-6 on the year.
In game two, the Racer offense exploded and it was highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Becker and Castile in the second. In total, six different MSU players recorded hits in game two, while 10 reached base. Miller once again led the offense by going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Francis (1-1) pitched the first two and final two innings of the game and allowed just one hit and a walk to earn the first collegiate win of her career.
This weekend will be the fourth series between Murray State and the Skyhawks, with UT Martin holding a 9-3 advantage. The Racers are 2-2 all-time at home against the Skyhawks, 1-1 at neutral sites and 0-6 in Martin.
Murray State won its first-ever series against UTM last season when it took two out of three games in Murray. The Racers won the first two games in the series, 4-1 and 3-2, but dropped the series finale, 4-2. The Skyhawks then won a fourth meeting in the OVC tournament in Martin, 7-1.
The Skyhawks are currently 28-11 on the season and are 9-4 in the OVC. On Wednesday, UT Martin picked up a non-conference win over Southern Illinois on Wednesday by besting the Salukis 5-4 in 11 innings.
Deven Wilson led the Skyhawks on the day by going 2-for-5, including driving in the winning run in the 11th inning. Last weekend, UT Martin split a pair of road double headers with Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State, both of whom were swept by the Racers earlier this season.
Leah Taylor currently leads three Skyhawks on the year with averages over .300 at .352, while Kenzi Tate follows closely behind with a .339 average and a team-high 41 RBIs. Tate also leads her team in the circle with a 15-2 record, 71 strikeouts and a 2.58 ERA. Casey Vincent, the Skyhawks' other starter, is currently 11-4 on the season with a 2.45 ERA and has a team-high 83 strikeouts.
Saturday's doubleheader at Giles Softball Field in Martin is scheduled for a 1 p.m., start, with Sunday's finale also scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for all three games and can be found at GoRacers.com.
