The Murray State softball team will wrap-up the non-conference portion of its 2013 season Wednesday when it welcomes Memphis to Central Park for a doubleheader.
The Racers picked up two much needed wins on Sunday when they swept a doubleheader at SIU Edwardsville, 2-1 and 3-1. In game one, the Racers struck first when Ellyn Troup doubled off of SIU Edwardsville pitcher Haley Chambers in the top of the second. With Chambers, who entered the game with a .197 opponent's batting average, rattled Leslie Bridges made it 2-0 by belting her third home run of the season.
Despite allowing 10 hits in the game, the Murray Sate defense was impeccable as it committed no errors and stranded 11 Cougars on the base paths. Shelby Kosmecki picked up her eighth win of the season in game one as she allowed just one run with three strikeouts and two walks over six complete innings. CheyAnne Gaskey came in two batters into the seventh and retired the final three batters to earn the save.
In the second game, it was the Cougars that were first on the board this time and it all began with a walk. The batter moved to second in the next at bat on a sacrifice bunt and scored on the following play on a single and an error by Murray State.
However, in the fourth the Racers were able to take advantage of several defensive miscues by SIUE and surged to a 3-1 lead. Mo Ramsey led Murray State in the finale by going 3-for-4, while Christian Cox and Erica Howard each went 2-for-3. Gaskey turned in a complete game effort to move to 12-7 on the year after she allowed just one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Gaskey had quite the Sunday as she broke three different records in her two appearances at SIU Edwardsville. In game one, Gaskey recorded her fourth save of the season to capture the single-season record, previously held by Shelby Kosmecki, who had three in 2010. The save also gave her six for her career, breaking Kosmecki's record of five. In game two, Gaskey tallied five strikeouts to give her 132 on the year, one better the Kosmecki's previous record of 131 set last season.
The Racers and Tigers met for the first time last season in a doubleheader at Memphis. The Tigers came away with a pair of 1-0 victories thanks to two misfires by the Racers.
A Murray State error allowed the winning run to cross the plate in the sixth inning of game one, followed by runner who advanced home on an illegal pitch in the first inning of game two. Pitcher Ellen Roberts came up one walk short of a perfect game in the opener as she notched her first career no-hitter.
The Tigers will enter the doubleheader on a three-game skid after being swept by Conference USA rival Houston in a three-game set this past weekend in Memphis. Memphis, which is now 22-35 overall, has now lost six of its last seven games with the lone win in the stretch coming last Wednesday against UT Martin.
The Tigers are 3-1 against OVC opponents this season as they notched single game victories at UT Martin and at home against Southeast Missouri, but split a doubleheader at Belmont. Wednesday's doubleheader will be Memphis' last games of the regular-season ahead of the C-USA Tournament next Thursday in Tulsa.
Morgan Mosby currently leads the Tigers offensively with a .302 batting average, 25 RBIs, a .390 slugging percentage and two home runs, all team highs. In the circle, Roberts leads the way at 13-23 on the season with an ERA of 3.01, 176 strikeouts and a .258 opponent's batting average.
