Women’s Soccer Cruises Past Alabama A&M, 10-0
8/30/2013 8:27:00 PM | Women's Soccer
What started with a goal by junior Pavlina Nepokojova in the 2nd minute ended in a 10-0 rout of Alabama A&M by the Murray State women's soccer team on Friday evening in Huntsville.
The performance by the Racers was one of the best in recent memory. The 10 goals are the second most ever in a single-game for MSU and the 38 shots taken by the team ranks third all-time. In total, seven different players combined for the 10 goals, marking the most individual scorers in a single-game in program history.
Nepokojova followed her eventual game-winner with a second goal in the 10th minute. Just two minutes after that, junior Julie Mooney, who assisted on the first goal, got one of her own to make it 3-0. Freshman Lauren Frazier capped the scoring in the half by picking up her own brace with goals in the 22nd and 25th minutes.
In the second half, sophomore Alexa Hosey resumed the barrage with a pair of goals in the 57th and 68th minutes. Sandwiched between the two Hosey goals was another by first-year senior Tasha Merritt in the 66th minute. Sophomore Racheal Foxley and Lyssie Wright closed out the day by scoring in the 74th and 84th minutes, respectively.
Freshmen goalkeepers Savannah Haberman and Kylie Lawrence combined for Murray State's third shutout of the season, with each keeper notching 45 minutes between the posts and each making two saves. In 245 minutes in goal so far this season, Haberman has yet to be scored on and has made 12 saves.
"We are very happy with the result," said head coach Beth Acreman after the match. "Several players got on the score sheet and the fact that we are maintaining shutouts early in the season is important. The team played hard and we accomplished things that we worked on in training this week, but now we are solely focusing on Sunday's match at Cutchin Field."
The win keeps Murray State unbeaten on the young season with a record of 2-0-1, while the loss drops Alabama A&M to 0-4 on the year. On Sunday, the Racers will return to Cutchin Field for their home opener against UALR.
