The Murray State women's soccer team will play just one game this week; its nonconference finale at Arkansas State Sunday. At 3-2-1 so far this season, a win or draw in the contest will give the Racers their best regular-season nonconference win percentage in program history.
The Racers suffered their first losses of the season last week when they fell 0-2 at South Alabama and 2-4 in Troy. At South Alabama, the Racers struggled offensively and were outshot, 21-5, on the day. It was just the second time this season that the Racers were shutout and was also a season-low for shots taken.
In the game at Troy, Julie Mooney scored in the 30th minute and gave MSU a 1-0 lead at halftime. However, in the second half, the Trojans outscored Murray State, 4-1, for the win. Lyssie Wright scored the lone second half goal for the Racers in the 83rd minute; it was her second of the season.
Sunday will be the ninth meeting between Murray State and Arkansas State and the third consecutive. The series is currently tied at 4-4 with the Racers leading 2-1 at home and Arkansas State leading 2-1 in Jonesboro. Last season, the Red Wolves picked up a 1-0 win in Murray, marking the end of a three-match win streak in the series by MSU and the first-ever win by ASU at Cutchin Field.
Much like the Racers, Arkansas State is coming off a two-loss weekend and will enter Sunday's match at 3-3-2. The Red Wolves took a tough loss Friday at Tulsa, 4-0, followed by a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker Sunday at Oral Roberts.
Katey Carmichael and Samhia Simao broke up the scoreless tie against ORU in the 61st and 64th minutes, giving ASU a 2-0 lead. However, a goal in the 77th minute and a successful Oral Roberts penalty kick less than four minutes later forced the game into overtime, where the Red Wolves fell in the 94th minute.
Christine Giles currently leads ASU with four goals on the year, while Loren Mitchell and Madison Joyce have three assists each. In goal, Amanda Lee leads the way for Arkansas State with five starts in six appearances. In nearly 500 minutes between the posts this season, Lee has come up with 35 saves and allowed 10 goals, for a goals against average of 1.80.
Game time in Jonesboro is set for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for the match and the link can be found at GoRacers.com.
