A late goal by Julie Mooney was not enough to overcome a two goal deficit, as the Murray State women's soccer team fell to UT Martin, 2-1, Sunday in an OVC affair at Cutchin Field.
The Skyhawks (3-7-1, 1-1 OVC) were first on the board in the 24th minute with a goal off one of their nine corner kicks on the afternoon. Ellie Myrick took the corner for UTM and after the ball bounced around, Abi Sanvee headed the ball past MSU goalkeeper savannah Haberman for the early 1-0 lead.
In the 64th minute, UT Martin went up 2-0 on what went on to be the game-winning goal. After Haberman cleared the ball on high shot by Michelle Calmeyn, Calmeyn found the ball again and passed it to Dominika Conc who tapped the ball past Haberman for the score.
With their backs against the wall, Julie Mooney turned in another clutch performance to cut the deficit in half in the 85th minute. Megg Hudson found Mooney with a pass from the top of the box, who was then able to beat UT Martin goalkeeper Mariah Klenke, to make it 2-1. However that would be as close as the Racers would get to equalizing, as they were unable to get any shots off following the goal.
Mooney led Murray State on the day with four shots, including two that went on goal and one that bounced off the crossbar. Haberman went the full 90 minutes between the posts for MSU, and despite the two goals, came up with five saves.
The Racers will continue OVC play on the road next weekend with a pair of games in the greater Nashville area. On Friday, the Racers will travel to Music City to take on Belmont at 5 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. Sunday kick-off against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville.
