Currently the fifth seed, Murray State can finish as high as third and as low as sixth with their performance over the three games in Cape Girardeau.
Â
The Racers picked up their first win in five tries against Memphis on Wednesday, 4-3. The game see-sawed back and forth from the very beginning with the Tigers finally took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Shelbey Miller put MSU back on top for good with a two-run, home run, her third of the season.
Cayla Levins helped lead MSU on the day by going 2-for-3 and scoring two of the Racers's four runs, including the winning one. In the circle, CheyAnne Gaskey earned the win and moved her record to 12-11 on the season. In the final four innings, she allowed just one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Â
Murray State and Southeast Missouri have met on 11 previous occasions with MSU holding a 7-4 advantage. Only one of the previous four series between the two teams has taken place in Cape Girardeau, with the Redhawks taking two of those three games back in 2011. Last season, SEMO and Murray State played just two games due to weather with the two teams splitting a doubleheader. The Redhawks took the opener, 9-3, but MSU bounced back in the finale, 8-1.
Â
Southeast Missouri has had its share of troubles this season, as it enters the weekend at 10-23 overall and 2-18 in the OVC. However, the Redhawks did pick up a pair of wins against NAIA member Missouri Baptist on Wednesday, 10-5 and 13-1. Leah Duffe led SEMO on the day by going a perfect 7-for-7 with six RBIs, four runs, two doubles and a home run.
Savannah Carpenter currently leads the Redhawks with a .422 average, while Jamie Woodworth follows at .359. In the circle, Hannah Durham has logged the most appearances for SEMO and is currently 2-10 on the season with a team-low ERA of 4.45 and 41 strikeouts. Â
