Volleyball Travels to Valparaiso Tournament

Racer volleyball will play in their fourth and last weekend tournament of the 2014 season. The weekend will get started with Murray State facing host Valparaiso on Friday at 7:00 p.m. MSU will face George Washington and Sacramento State on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
The Racers went 3-0 to become the Chattanooga Classic Champion last week by sweeping pair of opponents, Mississippi Valley 3-0 on Friday, and Wright State 3-0 on Saturday, before defeating tournament host Chattanooga 3-2.

Following the Tournament, Taylor Olden was named Tournament MVP, while Alyssa Lelm and Sam Bedard were named to the All-Tournament team.

During the weekend, five Racers notched double-doubles. Hannah Stultz had her first double-double against Mississippi Valley with 24 assists and 10 digs. Bedard recorded her third and fourth double-double of the season with 28 assists and 11 digs against Wright State, and 48 assists and 31 digs against Chattanooga. Olden notched her first double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs against Chattanooga. Scottie Ingram added a pair of double-doubles with 11 kills and 10 digs against Wright State, and 20 kills and 19 digs against Chattanooga. Emily Schmahl recorded 11 kills and 22 digs against Chattanooga in her first double-double of the season.

 Olden leads the team with 97 kills, while Alyssa Lelm currently leads the team hitting .415. Bedard currently leads the team adding 290 assists, and service aces with 12. Lorenz helps the team defensively with 126 digs, followed by Bedard with 95. Lelm gives the team 0.81 blocks per set.

MSU has not faced Valparaiso since 2011. The Crusaders played in the Skyhawk invitational in Martin, Tenn. last weekend. They swept all three opponents; Western Carolina, Drake, and UT Martin. Valparaiso has won two consecutive tournament championships.
 Emily Campbell was named Tournament MVP, while Morganne Longoria and Taylor Graboski were named to the All-Tournament team. Campbell averaged a team-best 4.44 kills/set on .323 hitting in the trio of sweeps. They played a mid-week match against Toledo, defeating the Rockets.
The Crusaders have not dropped a set since Sept. 5. The five straight sweeps ties a program record for most consecutive 3-0 victories, last accomplished in October of 2004.
Murray State has not faced George Washington since 1992. The Colonials fell to Baylor and Illinois State, while defeating Columbia in the Colonials Challenge last weekend. George Washington defeated Georgetown during a mid-week match. GW hit .310, while limiting Georgetown to just 17 kills.
Chidima Osuchukwu and Kelsey Newman were named to the All-Tournament team. Osuchukwu hit .357 with 29 kills, while Newman had a team-leading 34 kills in addition to 15 digs. Maddy Doyle currently leads the defense with 161 digs, while the team averages 17.67 digs per set. Jordan Timmer currently leads the team with 350 assists which accounts for 77 percent of the teams assists. Â

The Racers have not faced Sacramento State since 2011.Sacramento State participated in the Cal Poly ShareSLO Volleyball Tournament last weekend. They defeated San Jose State and Bakersfield while falling to Cal Poly.
 Madeline Cannon was named to the All-Tournament team after finishing the weekend with averages of 2.42 kills and 1.33 blocks per set to go along with a .348 hitting percentage.
The Hornets fell to mid-week opponent UC Davis, 3-2. They were without junior outside hitter and team captain, Sloan Lovett. Without Lovett, the team consists of only one upperclassman; junior Lauren Aikels.Â
