The Racers continue their 10-game homestand with a midweek matchup against Lindenwood (Ill.). MSU is coming off a 3-1 weekend in its series against Northern Illinois. The Racers scored 71 runs over the weekend, including 29 in the series finale Sunday, which is two runs shy of the program record for single-game runs.
Inside the Matchup
The Racers and Lynx are meeting for just the second time Wednesday. LU won last season's inaugural matchup, 8-2 in Murray. Nick Moore collected an RBI in the loss and Kipp Moore scored one of MSU's runs.
Gutzler Receives Multiple Honors
Outfielder Brandon Gutzler received player of the week honors from multiple publications this week for his phenomenal performance last week in the Racers' five games against Harris-Stowe and NIU. For the week, Gutzler hit .571 with eight extra-base hits, five of which were home runs. Gutzler also racked up 22 RBIs, scored 10 runs, had a .690 on-base percentage and slugged 1.429. For the week, Gutzler had four multi-RBI and multi-hit games and scored a run in all five contests. In the series finale against NIU, he had three home runs in consecutive at-bats. Those three homers are on shy of the OVC and program single-game record. For his efforts, Gutzler was named National Player of the Week by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball News, the NCBWA and College Sports Madness. Gutzler was also named the ADIDAS OVC Player of the Week
National Leader
Through eight games this season, the Racers lead the nation in total hits with 110 and Gutzler is the national leader with 23 RBIs and 2.88 RBIs per game. MSU also ranks fourth as a team in batting average at .363 and is second nationally with 91 runs scored and ninth in runs per game at 11.4.
Scouting Lindenwood
The Lynx are led by Ethan Ruff who leads the team with a .429 batting average, seven runs and five extra-base hits, he is also third on the team with four RBIs and is a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts. Drew Fair leads the squad with six RBIs and Jaren Linton has the lone home run for the Lynx this season. As a team, LU is hitting .240 with 11 doubles and three triples and is 17-for-22 on stolen base attempts. Camron Shipley leads the team with an ERA of 0.00 in six innings of work and three appearances. Alex Wittenbauer leads the Lynx with five appearances on the year and Nick Hummel has a team-leading 18 innings pitched. Both Hummel and Wittenbauer have Lindenwood's two wins on the year as well. The Lynx have a team ERA of 6.24 in 2016. Lindendwood is led by fifth-year Head Coach Logan Johnson.
