Racers Shutout Cougars to Win Series
3/20/2016 1:52:00 PM | Baseball
Ramsey Scott hit a leadoff solo home run in the second inning, Murray State scored three runs in the sixth and Ryan Dills pitched 6.2 innings of shutout baseball as the Racers shutout SIU Edwardsville, 4-0 Sunday at Reagan Field to win the series.
Dills struck-out eight batters in the win, including the side in the first two innings of the game, while allowing just five hits and two walks in his best outing of the season. Brandon Hicks came on in the seventh to close-out the shutout effort as he allowed just a single hit in 2.1 innings.
Scott's team-leading seventh home run of the season was all that the Racers (10-12, 3-3 OVC) would need in the game. Scott's blast to right field is his first game-winning RBI of the season. MSU did get some big insurance runs in the sixth however, thanks to a two-out, two-RBI single through the right side of the infield from Caleb Hicks scored Adam Bauer and Cody Gilbert to make it 3-0 Racers. The next batter, Kipp Moore tacked on the last MSU run with a single up the middle that scored Scott from third base.
Bauer, Gilbert and Hicks all went 2-for-4 on the day while Moore and Scott both went 1-of-3 with a walk. Scott was intentionally walked in the sixth inning to load the bases for Hicks prior to his big base hit. MSU out-hit the Cougars (2-14, 1-5 OVC) 9-6 in the game while SIUE left 12 batters stranded on base. The Racers left five on.
MSU returns to action Tuesday as Memphis comes to Reagan field for a mid-week contest. First pitch is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
